Our site at Havelock North has had a major impact on the development of the New Zealand fruit industry since it opened 50 years ago. It was here that researchers pioneered controlled atmosphere storage, enabling NZ fruit to reach far-off markets in peak condition. Since then our new and exciting pipfruit and summerfruit varieties have been capturing price premiums world-wide well above those for older cultivars. New apricots, nectarines and plums, white-fleshed peaches, crisp pears, and apples such as Pacific Rose are the result of years of work by scientists at this site. Now a major focus is also the development of programmes such as Integrated Fruit Production and Integrated Pest Management, which use natural methods to control disease and pests, so that crops can be grown using minimal amounts of chemicals. |
