Our Clyde site, situated in a pip and summerfruit growing region in Central Otago, continues a tradition of innovative fruit research that started in 1948. Now it is at the centre of HortResearch's programme on organic production methods.
A breeding programme for apricots, peaches and nectarines led to the "Clutha" series of apricots which strengthened the transition of the local summerfruit industry from domestic to export production.
Local industry has also benefited from research on pollination, rootstocks, and pest and disease control.
The dry climate is highly suitable for organic growing and in 1997 the first consignment of organic apples from Clyde was exported to Europe. Recent research has contributed to the successful development of organic management programmes, particularly for pest and disease control.
Fruitgrowers are also being guided through the development stages for Integrated Fruit Production programmes, on the basis of trial results from Clyde.
