HortResearch's citrus improvement programme based at Kerikeri is investigating new products with easily peeled rind, seedlessness, and increased size and disease resistance.

• 'Bay Gold', a juicy, tangelo-like citrus fruit bred by HortResearch was the first citrus cultivar to be registered for Plant Variety Rights in New Zealand
• 'Bay Zest', 'Bay Sweetie' and 'Bay Sunset' are three new mandarin releases suitable for the home garden
• HortResearch imports, evaluates and distributes cultivars from overseas and maintains accessions in the National Citrus Germplasm Collection
• HortResearch is winding up a citrus breeding programme to breed and select citrus cultivars adapted to the New Zealand climate
