DNA cloning

Science programme: Genomic technologies

The gene cloning team offers a service that takes an original cDNA clone and its sequence, and engineers the cDNA into a suitable vector for gene expression or silencing in plants, in order to determine a gene’s function. Purpose built vectors have been constructed which are suitable for plant transformation of Arabidopsis, tobacco, apple and/or kiwifruit.

In addition, the gene cloning team operates a service that allows researchers to express a particular cDNA in a bacterial host. These recombinant proteins encoded by the cDNA of interest can be rapidly purified and used in enzyme assays to determine function and/or in structural studies.

Members of the gene cloning and sequencing team have a wide range of experience in microbiology, molecular biology and gene expression technologies. Their key role is to provide a service that underpins projects within HortResearch that involve gene technologies. The team also offers its cloning services to external clients.
